Why couples retreats might spice up marriage

As I sat down to write this article, I could not help but wonder how many married individuals can honestly answer the question: “Why did we get married?” Was it for love, companionship, or maybe because it was the next logical step in our relationship?

Whatever the reason, one thing is certain — marriage takes work, and lots of it! And I would imagine, once one is in it, the idea is to make it beautiful and long lasting, in spite of challenges.

In today’s fast-paced world though, couples often find themselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, leaving little time for romance.

Add to that the stresses of juggling demanding careers and family roles, and in some cases financial and social pressures that can take a toll on even the strongest relationships. It is no wonder that many marriages have sadly fallen by the wayside.

So, what is the solution to all this busy-ness? We have, in past articles,  discussed date nights and other ways for couples to connect.

While of course there is no magic bullet, no “one-size-fits-all”, I would like to propose an idea that might also contribute greatly to couples’ endeavours to get time alone, ie couples retreats! So this thought was inspired by a discussion I was involved in this week, about curated holidays.

One expert in that field spoke passionately about the many places that can be visited to enjoy our beautiful Zimbabwe and how curated holidays that suit each family, individual or group, were a great way to maximise on holiday trips.

From the vivid descriptions, I could picture it, a couple walking into the sunset, with nature all around to add to the serene ambience.

And I thought, with the Independence and Easter holidays approaching, what if couples took advantage of such getaways to just enjoy some time to themselves?  It does not even have to be a retreat that costs an arm and a leg — you can be creative, explore places within reach and suiting your budget.

Here is what I have seen retreats do for some couples:

A chance to reconnect

Imagine escaping the chaos of city life for a few days, surrounded by nature, tranquillity, and most importantly, each other. A couples retreat offers just that — a chance to reconnect, recharge, and rediscover the love and passion that brought you together in the first place.

But do couples retreats really work? The answer is a resounding yes, as long as the couple involved will actually take it as a positive break from routine, and not just a new location for fights.  After all, where there is a will, there is a way! By providing a safe, supportive, and relaxing environment, couples retreats allow partners to:

Rekindle intimacy and emotional connecting

Improve communication and conflict resolution skills

Strengthen your bond and commitment to each other

Rejuvenate your minds, bodies, and spirits

Marriage has its demands on couples, who are expected to work through challenges and difficulties together. While this sense of commitment and resilience is admirable, it can also lead to couples neglecting their own needs and desires.

Couples retreats offer a unique opportunity to prioritise your relationship, away from the pressures of family, friends, and community expectations. By investing time and effort into your marriage, you can return home refreshed, revitalised, and better equipped to tackle life’s challenges together.

Curated holiday experiences for couples

So, in Zimbabwe for instance, where can couples go for a romantic retreat? Here are but a few suggestions out of a myriad of places one can think of:

Matobo Hills: This stunning region offers breathtaking scenery, exciting outdoor activities, and cosy lodges perfect for a romantic getaway.

Victoria Falls: While often associated with adventure and thrill-seeking, Vic Falls also offers a range of relaxing and romantic activities, from sunset cruises to couples’ spa treatments and a whole lot more, depending on your interests.

Gonarezhou National Park: For a more secluded and peaceful experience, Gonarezhou offers luxurious lodges and breathtaking views of the African wilderness.

What to expect from a couples retreat

A well-curated holiday experience can work wonders for couples. The good thing, when every aspect of the trip is handled for you, is it leaves you with plenty of time to enjoy activities and time alone together.

To name just a few benefits of curated holidays, consider these:

Rekindled romance: A change of scenery and relaxed atmosphere can help spark intimacy and passion.

Improved communication: Guided workshops and activities can help couples improve their communication skills and resolve conflicts.

Relaxation and rejuvenation: A break from the stresses of daily life can work wonders for your mental and physical health.

New experiences and memories: Try new activities, explore new places, and create lifelong memories together.

Marriage is a journey, not a destination. It takes work, commitment, and patience to build a strong and lasting relationship. Whatever stage whether newly married or veterans in it, exploring ways to keep the fire burning should be a concerted effort. While couples retreats might not be the answer to every marital challenge, they can certainly provide a much-needed boost to your relationship.

So, if you are feeling disconnected, stressed, or simply need a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, consider treating yourselves to a couples retreat. Your marriage — and your sanity — will thank you!

Let us keep the conversation going! Have you ever been on a couples retreat? What was your experience? Do you have any tips or recommendations for other couples?
