Why every decision matters

Gabriel Manyeruke

AS a learner, you face choices every day.

Some may seem trivial, like what to wear or eat, while others have the power to shape your future. The decisions you make, big or small, are like bricks in the foundation of your life.

They determine the person you become, the opportunities that come your way and the respect you earn from others.

Choosing to do the right thing is not always easy, especially when those around you seem to be taking shortcuts, lying, cheating or making reckless decisions.

But just because others make poor choices does not mean you have to follow suit.

Peer pressure: The silent force

Imagine you are taking an exam and the questions are tougher than you expected.

You glance around the room and notice some learners discreetly using hidden notes or whispering answers to one another. The teacher or invigilator is not watching and the temptation to cheat creeps in.

Or perhaps you have promised yourself you will not date until you have completed your Advanced Level studies. But now, your friends are all in relationships and they keep pushing you to give in.

They arrange blind dates, tease you about being single and insist you are missing out.

Then there is the influence of unhealthy habits.

Many of your friends may have started drinking, smoking or experimenting with drugs.

They make these behaviours seem exciting, cool and normal. You start to feel left out, questioning whether you should join the bandwagon just to maintain your friendships and have a sense of belonging.

Peer pressure is one of the strongest forces you will encounter.

The fear of being labelled “different” or the desire to fit in can lead you down a dangerous path. But before you act, pause and ask yourself: Will this decision help you or harm you?

Will you look back with regret or pride?

Thinking ahead: The long-term impact

Your decisions do not just affect the present; they shape your future.

Picture yourself years from now, reflecting on the choices you made during school. Will you be proud of your integrity or will you cringe at the times you compromised your values?

Would you want your actions to be publicly displayed on your school’s notice board for everyone to see?

If your teachers, parents and future employers were to review your decisions, would they admire you or question your character?

Each choice either builds your reputation or ruins it. A single wrong decision — cheating in a test, lying to teachers or engaging in harmful habits — can damage your credibility and close doors to future opportunities.

On the other hand, choosing honesty, discipline and responsibility earns you respect, trust and admiration.

Balancing priorities

Many learners struggle with balancing their passions with academic responsibilities.

Maybe you love sports, but your parents insist you focus more on studying. Perhaps you have a musical or                     artistic talent, but everyone tells you that only academic success is more important.

While studies are crucial, your talents and interests also matter. The key is to strike a balance.

Organise your schedule, set clear priorities and make time for both education and personal development. When making decisions, ask yourself whether your choice aligns with your goals.

Your life, your choices

At the end of the day, the power to shape your future lies in your hands.

No one else is responsible for your actions except you. Instead of following the crowd, be the person who stands firm in their values.

Make decisions you can be proud of.

Choose integrity over convenience, responsibility over recklessness and wisdom over impulse. Your future self will thank you for the decisions you make today.
