WICKNELL Chivayo’s US$1,6million cash present to Scottland for winning the Northern Region Division One title and securing a ticket to play in the Premiership next season is more than TWICE the sponsorship of the local top-flight league.
Chivayo has also delivered 20 Toyota Aqua vehicles which he pledged in the event the team would win against Herentals Under-20.
His cash injection alone dwarfs the top-flight league’s sponsorship of US$700 000 per year.
The package for the Premiership, which was revealed this year, ensures the top league gets US$1 130 000 from their main sponsors every year.
This includes the US$375 000 for the Chibuku Super Cup and US$55 000 for the Castle Challenge.
“I will gladly go ahead and honour the US1 million pledge I made to the club as a token in recognition of their relentless dedication and commitment that saw them rise to the top of the Northern Region Soccer League table,” he said.
“Scottland’s exceptional performance has been beyond my expectations, and for that, I am pleased to further commit an additional pledge of US$600 000 to assist their Premiership journey.”
This effectively means that the cash bonuses for Scottland, for winning their match against Black Mambas, were a staggering US$2,1 million.
It also means it was the richest one-off football game ever played in this country.
Chivayo’s US$1,6 million cash donation alone is:
· TWENTY SIX times more than what the Malawian Super League champions will get this year as prize money.
· FIVE times more than the entire improved sponsorship package of the Malawian Super League which now stands at about US$288 437.
· FORTY times more than the US$40 000 which Zambian champions Red Arrows received for winning their second league title, in three years, this year.
· TWENTY THREE times more than the US$70 000, in total value, which Red Arrows pocketed for winning the League and Cup double by also winning the ABSA Cup.
· FIFTY THREE times more than the US$30 000 which Red Arrows took home for winning the CECAFA Kagame Cup this year.
· SIXTEEN times more than the US$100 000 that Red Arrows pocketed for winning the League and Cup double in Zambia and the CECAFA Kagame Cup.
This, alone, shows that this is, indeed, a mind-blowing windfall and for a Division One game for that matter.
