IN a heartbreaking family dispute, Eunigate Chonzi, a widow, has been granted a protection order against her son, Linton Chisakuwana, whom she accuses of turning her life into a nightmare with his drunken rages, verbal abuse and violent threats.
Standing before Harare Civil Court Magistrate Johanna Mukwesha, Chonzi recounted how her son had chased her out of her late husband’s home — the same house where she had raised him and his siblings.
“I am a widow. I never imagined my own child would make me feel like a stranger in my home,” she said.
“He shouts at me, calls me names, and even abuses his brothers and sisters. The drinking has destroyed him.”
The final straw came when Linton allegedly pulled a knife on his own brother during a heated argument. “If others had not intervened, he might have killed him,” Chonzi said.
Chisakuwana did not deny most of the accusations but claimed his actions stemmed from frustration.
“I admit I went too far, and I want my mother to forgive me,” he said. “But she pushed me to that point.”
He blamed his mother for his brother’s death from cancer, claiming she had bought him cigarettes despite his illness.
“I was trying to save my brother’s life, but she would not listen. That is why I lost my temper,” he said.
Chonzi dismissed her son’s claims, insisting that alcohol had turned him into a person she no longer recognised.
“It is the drinking that makes him like this,” she said. “I just want peace in my home, but instead, I live in fear of my own child.”
After considering both sides, Magistrate Mukwesha granted the protection order, barring Chisakuwana from assaulting or insulting his mother, chasing her out of her home and causing any further disturbances.
He was also ordered to treat his mother with respect and seek help for his alcohol problem.
