A BULAWAYO security guard has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for beating up his wife with an axe handle and a baton after accusing her of cheating.

Roy Moyo (43) from Emganwini suburb, who is employed at Safe Guard security, said he assaulted his wife Ms Sithandekile Ndlovu (42) because he had found her with a secret cell phone which she hid in her bra, always on silent.

Moyo pleaded guilty to assault before West Commonage magistrate, Ms Tancy Dube.

The magistrate sentenced him to 18 months in prison and suspended three months on condition that Moyo does not commit a similar offence within the next three years. She further suspended 15 months on condition that Moyo performs 525 hours of community service at Nkulumane Police Station.

Moyo told the court that he wanted to discipline Ms Ndlovu when he assaulted her.

“I admit that I assaulted her. Okungenze ngazonda ngacina ngimtshaya yikuthi ubengiqambele amanga ukuthi ubedobhe ifoni endleleni. Akulanto enjalo, kusegcekeni ukuthi uyafeba (What made me so angry is that she lied that she had found the phone on a road somewhere. That’s not true, It’s obvious she’s cheating),” he said.

Prosecuting, Mr Tapiwa Solani said the incident occurred on July 8 this year at around 7PM.

“Moyo assaulted his wife several times with a baton and a wooden axe handle all over the body thereby causing her to sustain some injuries,” he said.

Ms Ndlovu said Moyo accused her of having an illicit affair.

“My husband found me on a call talking to someone and asked me where I got the new phone from. I told him that I picked it up some time ago,” she said.

“As I was trying to explain where I got the phone, my husband suddenly grabbed a thick wooden axe handle and bashed me all over the body with it. I sustained some injuries; my chest is very painful right now.” – @sharonbuwe
