A MUTARE man was hauled before the Mutare Civil Court last Monday by his wife who sought a protection order against physical and verbal abuse. Having had enough of her husband’s insults and assaults, Cathrine Jimu appeared before Mutare magistrate following assaults and insults by Arthur Muunga whenever he comes home drunk. They appeared before Mrs Anniah Ndiraya.

Jimu told the court that on three occasions she was forced to sleep outside after being heavily assaulted using fists and a belt for no apparent reason together with her two children aged nine and four years respectively.

“Whenever he comes home drunk, there won’t be any peace in the house. He calls me names and insults me using vulgar language before my children. He also assaults me using his hands or belt. All this happens for no apparent reasons Your Worship. I am now sick and tired of it,” said Jimu.

“He locked me outside the house during the night with my two children on three different occasions. All I need now is a peace order,” she said.
Asked to explain why he drinks alcohol when he does not know how to behave, Muunga said he was now quitting alcohol.

“Please forgive me Your Worship. I am quitting alcohol as it drives me mad and become violent to my wife and children,” said Muunga.
He said he loved his family. “There won’t be happiness in the house and the children will grow up with a bad picture of their parents’ relationship if the protection order is granted,” he said.

Mrs Ndiraya, however, dismissed Muunga’s plea and issued the protection order to Jimu. She warned Muunga that if he ever insults and forces his wife and children to sleep outside ever again, he will go to jail.
