A businessman from Shurugwi will spend 18 years in jail for brutally murdering his wife he accused of infidelity three years ago.
Noel Nkomo of Makusha Township in Shurugwi had denied charges of murdering his wife, Grace Zulu, when his trial began before High Court judge Justice Lawrence Kamocha on circuit court in Gweru this week. The court, however, found Nkomo (32) guilty of murder with constructive intent and sentenced him to 18 years in jail. In passing sentence, Justice
Kamocha said homes should never be turned into war zones where people end up being killed.
He said a jail term of above 20 years would have been appropriate if Nkomo had not spent a year in remand prison.
The state’s case was that in October 2010, Nkomo had a misunderstanding with Zulu following a phone call which the victim received. Nkomo accused Zulu of having an extra-marital affair. At around 9pm on the same day Nkomo locked all the doors to the house including that of the bedroom where he and Zulu were having an altercation. The court heard that, Nkomo went on to bash Zulu’s head against the wall until she collapsed and fell unconscious. She sustained a fractured skull. The following morning, Nkomo took Zulu to Shurugwi
General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on admission. Nkomo returned home with his wife’s body and dumped it in his bedroom before running away. Zulu’s body was discovered by Nkomo’s young brother who reported the matter to the police. Nkomo was later arrested by the police in Kwekwe in July last year.
