A Gweru woman’s bid to coerce her husband to give her a dollar by detaining him backfired when she was later severely assaulted for blocking him from getting out of the house. The woman, Ms Ratidzo Mafa (24), later went and filed an assault report against her husband, Trymore Gafu (20) at Mtapa Police Station, resulting in his arrest.
Gafu of Mtapa Section Six, was yesterday arraigned before Mrs Gertrude Mayenyoso facing a charge of domestic violence.
He pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to six months in prison.
Three months of the sentence were however suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and another three months were suspended on condition Gafu performs 105 hours of community service at Cecil John Rhodes Primary School.
For the State, Mr Kelvin Guveya told the court that on 9 June, Gafu was at his house in Mtapa suburb preparing to get into the city centre when his wife, Ms Mafa asked for a $1 to buy bread.
Mr Guveya said Gafu refused to give her the money saying the only $1 he had was for his bus fare.
He said Ms Mafa then insisted on having the dollar and blocked Gafu from leaving the house.
Gafu then became violent and assaulted Ms Mafa using fists.
Ms Mafa went and reported the matter at Mtapa Police Station leading to Gafu’s arrest.
