Wild animals stranded on Kariba Dam island

The rising water levels in Kariba Dam has left over 400 wild animals stranded on one of the islands on the dam.

Water levels in Kariba Dam have been steadily rising due to inflows from Zambezi River.

It recorded 486,82m on Monday last week. The dam, according to the Zimbabwe River Authority, was 86 percent full compared to 56 percent during the same period last year.

In an interview, Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo said the increased water levels in Lake Kariba threatened the lives of 300 impalas and 120 water bucks.

“The animals are stuck due to the rising water levels in the lake,” he said.

Mr Farawo said ZimParks officials provided supplementary feeding to save the animals from starving.
