The Silver Fox, who is now coach of the Cape Town side, said he remained bullish that his unfashionable side would survive the axe.
“I am not happy with Benjani’s level of fitness, but we must also understand that this is a player, who has not been in competitive action for a while,” said Mugeyi. We will be playing some friendly matches before the resumption of the league matches and hopefully I will be able to work on improving his fitness levels so that he can be more effective in our upcoming matches.” Mugeyi said he hopes to use the brief break from the Absa Premier
League games to come up with an effective strategy to help his team to start moving out of the relegation zone.
With eight games to go before the conclusion of the League title race, Chippa United are bottom of the Absa Premiership log with 16 points, and are in real danger of being relegated to the less fashionable world of lower league football. A shock 3-2 defeat at the hands of National First Division side United FC also saw them being eliminated from this year’s edition of the Nedbank Cup.
There are now fears that Mugeyi — who has lost five of his six matches since taking over the coaching reigns — might soon be relieved of his duties if Chippa United do not start collecting maximum points.
But the Zimbabwean coach says he has what it takes to make sure his team will continue playing in the topflight league next season.
“Pressure is a part of football that you quickly get used to, especially when you are a coach,” said Mugeyi.
“The results have not been coming our way but I am happy with the effort and commitment that the players have been showing on the field of play.
“I am happy that we have some time to work on our shortcomings and rectify the challenges we are facing as a team.” — CAJ News.
