The development came after AIBA instructed all national associations and federations to drop the word amateur and Zaba will soon be known as the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation.
Zaba technical director, Petros Masiyambumbi, said they will soon apply to the Sports and Recreation Commission to officially change the association’s name.
“It’s a directive from AIBA, as Zaba we had a meeting and now the procedure is we have to apply to the Sports and Recreation Commission so that they can approve it,” said Masiyambumbi.
“We need to submit the application as soon as possible to SRC and attach the copy from AIBA so that we can officially use that name.
“We agreed during our annual general meeting and the secretary general is in the process of writing the letter.
“We also had a meeting with the SRC on Tuesday where they were clarifying on such issues, telling us that how it is done.”
The Zaba technical director said they also made some amendments to their constitution to conform to the AIBA constitution and will submit it to the Sports Commission for approval.
Zaba secretary general, Goodwill Sibanda, said they also dealt with other issues pertaining to the development of the sport such as the upgrading of coaches and they have since asked for help from the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee to assist them get funding from the Olympic Solidarity
“We discussed about the National Youth Games to be held in Bulawayo and we came up with rules of engagement and competition rules.
“We also talked about the upgrading of our coaches and we are waiting for a reply from ZOC because we had sent a request to them.
“We spoke about dual positions and we asked the concerned members to drop one post either in the national executive or province.
“We also discussed about a matter which has been giving us problems of professional boxers who left amateur boxing to compete in professional boxing and they now want to come back but they remain banned because its contrary to AIBA.
“In terms of development we have a new affiliate, Nash (National Association of Secondary Schools Heads). We have lined up a programme to train coaches and referees from schools to work with the children,” said Sibanda.
The national association is expected to host their first national competition next month.
