WILL the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe succumb to pressure and resign after a vote of no confidence from the provinces?
This is after seven of Zimbabwe’s 10 provincial basketball associations issued a vote of no confidence against the BUZ president Joe Mujuru and Secretary General Charmaine Yemurai Chamboko.
They are accused of gross misconduct, financial mismanagement, and systemic interference that has crippled the sport’s development.
The provinces, Harare, Mashonaland West, Masvingo, Mashonaland East, Mashonalnd Central, Midlands and Manicaland, have cited malicious acts, governance failures, and corruption as grounds for their immediate removal.
A letter obtained by Zimpapers Sports Hub and copied to Sports Minister Retired General Anselem Sanyatwe, Sports and Recreation Commission and Federation of International Basketball, outlines a series of damning allegations against the embattled leaders.
According to the letter, the provinces accuse Mujuru and Chamboko of “blatant interference in provincial elections and undermining democratic processes”.
“Fraudulent handling of FIBA funds, with no audited financial records despite public funding,” said the letter. “… Irregular national team selections, which led to the government banning Zimbabwe’s U16 squad from competing in Namibia.”
It is stated that there are no “financial opacity: no audited records, despite receiving FIBA and government grants, raising suspicions of mismanagement”.
“Mass Resignations: Key executives, including the Treasurer and Women’s Affairs Officer, quit over financial irregularities.
“Sponsor Withdrawals, Corporate backers withdrew support due to mistrust in BUZ’s financial stewardship,” read the letter.
Citing the BUZ Constitution, the provinces said they had right to remove officials guilty of incompetence or unethical conduct.
An emergency meeting has been scheduled for July 26, 2025, where provinces intend to establish an interim committee to salvage the sport.
“Your leadership has left basketball in ruins. Resign now, or face removal,” reads the letter.
Repeated attempts to contact Mujuru and Chamboko for comment were unsuccessful.
