ERNEST Masuku is set for his long awaited Zimbabwe debut after being named in the Chevrons’ squad for the two-match One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka, which begins Friday at Harare Sports Club.

The Tuskers fast bowler has been one of the country’s most consistent performers in recent seasons. He carries a List A average of 23.48 and impressed during the Pro50 Championship with 14 wickets in six innings at an average of 19.

Only weeks ago, the 32-year-old underlined his credentials for Zimbabwe A against Scotland XI at Harare Sports Club, taking nine wickets in two matches, including a career best 7 for 35, to spearhead an eight wicket victory.

Masuku joins Brad Evans, Tony Munyonga and Clive Madande as the four changes from the side that faced Ireland in February. Also back is veteran Brendan Taylor, returning to ODI cricket for the first time since 2021 after serving a three and a half year suspension for breaching the ICC anti corruption code.

Zimbabwe’s selectors, led by convener David Mutendera, have opted for a blend of experience and youth as the national side switches from Test cricket into the demands of the white ball game. Captain Craig Ervine is joined by seasoned middle order anchors Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza, while the pace department is boosted by the fit again Richard Ngarava and fellow quick Blessing Muzarabani.

Mutendera said the balance of the squad gives Zimbabwe the best chance against Sri Lanka.

“We are delighted to welcome Brendan back into the fold. His experience and quality are invaluable, especially in pressure situations, and his presence will no doubt lift the dressing room. This squad has been selected to give us the best chance against a strong Sri Lankan side. We have combined proven match winners with players who are hungry to make their mark, and that mix of experience and energy will be crucial,” Mutendera said.

Head Coach Justin Sammons stressed the need for sharpness. “We’ve just come off a tough red ball series and now it’s about adjusting to the tempo and intensity of one day cricket. Sri Lanka are a strong white ball side and will punish any lapses, so we need to be sharp from ball one. Clarity in roles will be key. Each player must understand exactly what’s required. Get that right, and I believe we can compete strongly.”

Captain Ervine added: “Switching from red ball to white ball cricket is always a test, especially against a team of Sri Lanka’s calibre. We need to stay flexible, back our plans and make the most of our home conditions to compete strongly in both matches.”

The ODI series opener is on Friday with the second match on Sunday. The teams will then switch to T20Is at the same venue on September 3, 6, and 7.
