MATABELELAND Tuskers Cricket Franchise’s new coach Wayne James has named national team all rounder Sean Williams as his team’s captain for the coming season.
In an interview after meeting Matabeleland Tuskers players for the first time as their coach, James said Williams would be the skipper for all the formats taking over the captaincy from Gavin Erwing.
“Williams is our new captain for the season. He has been working very hard and I am sure this kind of responsibility will make him work extra hard. I also believe that the captaincy will bring greater things for the team.
“There are a lot of senior players at Matabeleland Tuskers who I believe will make Williams’ reign very much easy,” said James.
A former Zimbabwe national cricket team fringe player, James said he was pleased with the calibre of players at his disposal and was looking forward to a pleasant working relationship with the reigning Logan Cup champions.
He took over from ex-Zimbabwe national cricket team captain Heath Streak who turned down an offer to renew his contract.
James has been heavily involved with Matabeleland Tuskers’ off-season Cricket Academy and last season was in charge of the champions for their first matches when Streak was away on tour with the national team.
“The meeting with the players went on very well because I know most of these players on individual basis as I have worked with them before. I am excited with the job and I can see the players are also excited, they are committed and skillful people who I presume we are going to get positive results,” James said.
Some of the players who attended the meeting yesterday include John Nyumbu, Njabulo Ncube, Bradley Staddon, Brian Chari who spent the better part of the off-season at the national academy in Harare and young Goodwill Mamhiyo who has just returned from club cricket in England.
Tawanda Mupariwa who spent last season at Southern Rocks also attended the meeting held at Queens Sports Club.
