This summer’s new five week run of grass court tennis tournaments will culminate in unprecedented financial rewards for the Wimbledon champions, although prize money has slightly levelled off from recent years. If Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova can repeat their triumphs of 2014 they will earn £1.88 million each, while first round singles losers will take home £29,000 each.
However, a break has been applied to the spiralling pay rises for players seen at the All England Club in the past few seasons, with the overall purse going up only seven per cent this time, to an overall £26.75 million.
Aside from steep rises for wheelchair doubles players, the biggest increases seen in the main draw this year will be the nine per cent given to those who win one singles match to get to the second round.
They will make £47,000.
All England Club Chairman Philip Brook was keen to put this year’s deceleration in financial rewards in the context of the fact that the prize money at SW19 has gone up from £14.6 million in 2011, with the winners going from £1.1 million to £1.8 million.
The richest prize in tennis continues to be at the US Open where, going on current exchange rates, the winner last year got £1.96 million.- Sportsmail.
