Windmill on Tuesday launched the US$40 000 tournament that will have both boys and girls competing with the winners being guaranteed of floating trophies and soccer kits. Most of the schools which will take part have been drawn from Harare.
Former Copa Coca-Cola champions Dewure and Pamushana of Masvingo Province and Bulawayo’s Gifford are the only schools from outside Harare which have been included in the tournament.
A spokesman for the company said their aim was to promote football at grassroots level.
“We have noted with concern that there are only Under-16 tournaments and the seniors in schools have been left out and we have come to revive our relationship with schools.
“We are looking forward to an exciting tournament that will be played in the true spirit of sportsmanship,” he said.
Windmill are coming back to promote junior football after withdrawing in mid-90s when players like Alois Bunjira took part in the tournament.
The launch of the tournament was graced by several football followers who included CAPS United assistant coach and tournament product Bunjira.
