Alick Macheso’s show when the musicians stormed Marondera.
Macheso and his Orchestra Mberikwazvo outfit were left counting their losses at Comoil Gardens after the show, held at an open space, was washed away by the rains that pounded the town on Friday.
A combination of bad weather and stiff competition left the “king of sungura” crawling on the ground as fans snubbed his show.
It appears the Mberikwazvo leader mis-timed on the Marondera show as – it also played host to prolific guitarist and composer Andy Brown.
But the dancehall prodigy born Wallace Chirumiko played before a sellout crowd at Rat and Mouse where he performed a mixed bag of his new and old songs such as “Takaipa Takaipa” and “League Tatora”.
The slim singer who spots a woollen hat to cover his long dreadlocks showed why he is one of the most sought after musicians in the country as he turned hit songs in succession.
He made his entry on stage displaying high energy accompanied by the equally high voltage sound system with which his music brings.
The self-christened “Messi we Raggae” wooed the crowd non-stop.
“League Tatora” is a song that was specifically composed to celebrate his victory at the Nama 2011 awards where he scooped two awards including the People’s Choice Award (Music).
“Mujagwa” is a follow up to the hit track ” Musarova Big man” off his last album, which saw him scaling heights in local music scene.
The crowd sang along to his new tracks – acquainting themselves well to the new songs.
Show promoter and owner of the nightclub Danmore Mutyambizi was happy with the huge turnout.
“We have nothing to complain as Winky D played before a sellout crowd.
He has huge following here in Marondera despite the fact that there was Macheso playing in the same town,” he said.
