Winter Jazz Festival lives up to billing

Uppermost on people’s minds is be the City Sports Centre gig where musical legend Oliver Mtukudzi, Winky D, Suluman Chimbetu and Munya Mataruse played to a full house.
All four artistes managed to keep the crowd on their feet all evening with superb performances.

The first act of the day was Munya, who justified his inclusion in the line-up with a polished act and had the crowd up and dancing to his tunes and that of the late musical icon, James Chimombe. His illustrious teacher, Tuku, and fellow musician Picky Kasamba, who illuminated the festival with their katekwe dances, later joined Munya on stage.

Winky D also spiced up the event with his riddims. The singer, who is fresh from his Malaysian tour, mixed old and new tunes, which left the crowd in a frenzy. Stunner joined Winky D to perform their duet “Vaudze” and Guspy Warrior also joined Winky D to perform the hit song “Buss Di Shot”.

Tuku took to the stage after Winky D and showed the young musicians that he is indeed the granddad in the music sector. He rekindled the yesteryear memories, when he teamed up with Picky for their katekwe dances, which propelled the two to great heights a few years back, before Picky called it a day.

Mtukudzi, who was recently nominated Ambassador of Goodwill by the United Nations, lived up to his name as one of the top performers in the country with an energetic performance that belies his age.
Sulu, who was the last act of the day took revellers down memory lane with renditions from his late father’s discography.

As has become the norm, Tuku had to join Sulu on stage and go through the famed “Kata” song, and the crowd just loved it.
If anything, the just ended Winter Jazz Festival will be remembered for bringing artistes from various genres under one roof to provide maximum entertainment for the fans.
