THE newly formed Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association (BMCA) Winter T20 League is set to get underway this weekend with three matches lined up for Saturday.
The six-team league will see local clubs battle it out for the top honours in what has been hailed as a good move by the sport’s administrators in the province. The three matches pencilled in for tomorrow will be taking place at Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC).
Amakhosi Cricket Club 1, BAC, Dingani Bookshop Cricket Club, Nketa Cricket Club 1, Queens Sports Club 1 and Wholesale Beef Bulls Cricket Club are the six local clubs that will be competing in the inaugural edition of the league.
The first ball of the league will be bowled at 8 am in a match pitting BMCA Second League sides, Dingani Bookshop Cricket Club and Wholesale Beef Bulls Cricket Club. Soon after the opener, Nketa Cricket Club will go on to face BAC in a match pencilled to get underway at 11.15am.
Queens Cricket Club and Amakhosi Cricket Club will battle it out in the last match of the day in what promises to be an exhilarating game of cricket. The game is scheduled to start at 2.30pm. BMCA Fixtures Secretary, Tendai Musasa said it’s all systems go.
“The Winter League is all set to commence on Saturday at BAC with the first game scheduled for 8 am. It will see four first-league clubs – Amakhosi, Queens, BAC and Nketa – and two second league clubs – Wholesale Beef and Dingani Bookshop – battling it out on five weekends with three games being played on each match day at one venue.
All the six clubs are geared up to go and we should see some exciting cricket in the City of Bulawayo,” said Musasa.
The league is one of the many initiatives that the BMCA has taken up to make sure that players get as much time on the cricket field as they possibly can.
The league will also make sure that players remain in good condition during the off-season. Making the tournament a T20 event was also meant to make sure that the players get adequate rest during the off season.
It also aims at making local cricket attractive and exposing talent that will contribute to the national teams. The Winter League will be of huge benefit in curbing the abuse of drugs and alcohol.—@brandon_malvin
