This is a celebration honouring mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. It is important on this day to express love, respect and to honour women for their contribution in nurturing families, communities and indeed the nation.
Besides giving life, women play a critical role in building nations as they are the first port of socialisation after birth.
They offer succour by feeding, protecting and ensuring that children are provided with all they need to lead healthy lives.
Women sacrifice a lot to ensure the well-being of families even in the most trying times. These are our heroines who deserve a special place in everyone’s heart.
Giving them flowers alone without love is not enough when compared to their sacrifices. The world is awash with stories of women who had to forgo a lot of lifetime opportunities to take care of the welfare of their families. Some flung themselves in harm’s way, like running through raging fires to save their children. All this shows just how important mothers are.
This year’s Mother’s Day comes at a time when the world is reeling under the effects of coronavirus (Covid-19), which has killed thousands of people globally and left many others sick and requiring treatment.
It is with this in mind that I implore mothers countrywide and the world over to spare a moment and pray for our people.
Let us as mothers lead from the front and seek God’s guidance to overcome this deadly pandemic. As a mother, I encourage all women to take control and console the bereaved who have lost their loved ones because of this pandemic.
Men may work from dusk to dawn, but a woman’s work barely ends as they have many challenges to address in the home.
Mother’s Day gives us a perfect opportunity to stop and reflect on all their hard work. I honour you all, from our sisters, grandmothers and mothers-in-law. A mother’s love gives everyone the strength to succeed. We are in the world because of you, mothers.
You are special and I am thankful to have all mothers of this country who are God-fearing, strong, hard-working, resilient and have endless love. Happy Mother’s Day!
With love from the First Lady, Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa.
