WITNESSES claim the commuter omnibus driver, whose vehicle was hit by a Ruwa-bound passenger train, was speeding and negligent.
The accident occurred near the shopping centre in Ruwa yesterday and no fatalities or injuries were recorded.
It is believed the driver tried to beat the train, which was on its way to ferry people from the dormitory town, to the rail crossing point.
“The driver was conducting his daily school run routine when this occurred. He uses this road every day so, maybe, he was late in his efforts to try and get the kids to school in time,” said Knowledge Marimu.
Some parents suggested the drivers, who transport school kids, should undergo thorough tests to avoid incidents like these.
“We give thanks to the Almighty because the driver was alone and no fatalities were reported.
“But, my question to the driver is, where were his defensive driving skills? When you were approaching the rail level crossing, you can’t beat the beast,” said Ernest Mahlahla.
Another parent, only identified as Taffi Mapuranga, urged drivers to observe traffic rules.
“Road crossing points need barricades, functional barricades.
“Imagine if this had happened with the innocent kids on board?”
Another parent, Albert Chigoche, blamed the kombi driver for negligence. “It’s the kombi driver’s fault, he failed to follow road instructions, which are clear, when it comes to stopping at all rail crossings,” said Chigoche.
