AN ELDERLY Mutare woman last week approached courts of law claiming maintenance for her 11-year-old grandchild from her son-in-law. Gloria Nyakuwambwa accused her son-in-law, Clayton Gango of neglecting his 11-year-old child since 2004 despite being gainfully employed.
Annia Ndiraya presided over the matter. Gango was in default.
Nyakuwambwa was claiming $100 as maintenance. She told the court the child’s mother stays in South Africa and she has been staying with her grandchild since she was less than a year old, but her father never contributed anything towards her upkeep.
“I started staying with the child since she was less than a year old. Since then her mother has been staying in South Africa where she works. Clayton never contributed anything towards the upkeep of the child since birth, and is now in Grade Six. Things are no longer stable and I need money to cater for her needs.
“I need $100 to pay for the child’s upkeep Your Worship,” said Nyakuwambwa. Gango was in default. Ruling was passed that he would pay $90 maintenance with effect from December 31 until she turns 18.
