Woman demands share of property

A Harare woman took her abusive ex-husband to court, claiming a share of property they jointly acquired.

Janet Kafudza accused her ex-husband, Knowledge Lameck, of abusing her and applied for a protection order against him. She also told the court that she wants her share of property they acquired together.

Her application was granted, but magistrate Tamara Chibindi said her court had no jurisdiction in sharing of property.

Kafudza told the court that her former husband insults and assaults her.

“He insults me and calls my father at midnight insulting him. He hit me with a pot and I sustained a head injury.

“He also burnt my clothes when we had an argument,” she said.

Kafudza also said she wants her share of property they jointly acquired.

“I want my property which he is refusing to give me because we acquired it together in the eight years we were married.

“I met him when he was sleeping on the floor and had nothing, so I want my property. I cannot walk away with nothing,” she said.

Lameck did not oppose the application, but told the court that his ex-wife only owns kitchen utensils.

“I do not oppose, but the property is not hers. She owns kitchen utensils only,” he said.

Magistrate Chibindi granted the protection order and ordered Lameck not to insult or harass the applicant.
