A Tsholotsho man has been arrested for allegedly detaining and raping his younger brother’s wife for five days. Vincent Moyo, 25, who lives alone in Matshona village under Chief Gampu, allegedly detained and raped his brother’s wife daily until she managed to escape on the fifth day.

The incident happened last Tuesday.

The victim’s husband is in South Africa where he works.

Moyo is admitted at Tsholotsho District Hospital after being assaulted by a mob which apprehended him a day after his victim escaped from his hut.

The officer Commanding Lupane District, Chief Superintendent Johannes Govo, confirmed the incident.

“The accused is being treated at Tsholotsho hospital under police guard. He will be attended to by the courts while on his hospital bed,” he said.

The woman, who is 28-years-old, told The Chronicle that on August 5, she visited her parents in Matshona when she spotted her husband’s brother riding a bicycle. “I called him and begged for a ride to my homestead. He told me to be ready by 4PM and indeed he came and we proceeded home. When we reached my home, he demanded cash payment for the ride,” she said. “All of sudden, he said he didn’t want the money anymore and instead rode off with me to his homestead. When we got there he dragged me into his bedroom and locked me in.” She said Moyo raped her for five days three times a day. On August 10, she said, Moyo forgot to lock the door as he went out and she escaped.Mthandazo Nkomo, a neighbour, said they wanted to confront the suspected rapist immediately after they were told about the incident, but thought better of it.

“We feared that with him being a frequent visitor to South Africa and his gangster behaviour, he may be in possession of a gun,” he said.“When word went around the village, people got more furious and we decided to beat him up very hard. We surely wanted to discipline him and send a strong message to would-be rapists.” He said Moyo denied the allegations, claiming the two were in love.
