Woman escapes jail, to do 210 hours

A 29-YEAR-OLD married Mutare woman, who delivered a baby, stuffed it in a plastic bag and dumped the foetus near Zimta Railway Line, will perform 210 hours of unpaid work at Chikanga Police Station.
Judith Mukumbu (29), who was found guilty of infanticide, argued that she dumped the baby because her husband was an irresponsible beer guzzler when she appeared before Mutare magistrate Mrs Sekai Chiundura last Tuesday.

Mr Cuthbert Bhosha prosecuted.
The court heard that Mukumbu felt labour pains and put two plastic bags underneath her privates before she gave birth to a baby. She put the foetus into the plastic bags and threw them away near Zimta Railway line.
She was later arrested after a tip-off.

After she was asked why she committed such a heinous act, she said her husband was a drunkard.
“My husband drinks too much. We are living under difficult conditions and I wanted the child to die,” she said.
