A VICTORIA Falls man has been sentenced to a wholly suspended three months in jail after he assaulted his wife for asking him about his girlfriend.

Alvine Mlilo (45) pleaded guilty to physical abuse when he appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Ms Rangarirai Gakanje yesterday.

He said he became angry after his wife Ms Hilda Nyathi (25) hit him with a stone.

The couple had a misunderstanding when Mlilo’s unnamed girlfriend whom he claimed to have dumped, visited Ms Nyathi on numerous occasions demanding some money she said was borrowed by her husband.

“We had an argument about my former girlfriend who usually comes to our house and I was suggesting to my wife that we should get a peace order against her. She told me that I shouldn’t involve her in my issues and that’s when I left to go to work. She accused me of leaving before we could finish talking. She picked a stone and hit me with it,” said Mlilo.

He said his wife followed him to his workplace and along the way, they fought.

“I was walking ahead of her when she grabbed me from the back. That’s when I turned and slapped her,” said Mlilo.

The magistrate then sentenced him to three months in jail but suspended the term on condition that he doesn’t commit a similar offence within the next five years.

The couple has seven children and live at a squatter camp near Masue dump site behind Chinotimba suburb.

Prosecuting, Mr Listen Nare said the physical abuse took place on Sunday last week.

“Mlilo assaulted his wife with open hands twice on the face thereby causing her certain injuries as they were walking along a pathway near Chinotimba,” said the prosecutor.
