A WOMAN, 23, has been found guilty of selling her baby — just two days after giving birth.

She pleaded guilty before a Harare Magistrate to contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act.

The woman, who is from Gokwe, is expected back in court today for sentencing.

She claimed that her child had died shortly after being born.

However, it has since turned out that she connived, with another woman, to sell her baby, just two days after delivering the child.

It is the State’s case that the accused person sold her son to her accomplice on June 26, last year.

She had given birth in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Sometime in October, last year, her accomplice found a way to smuggle the infant into Zimbabwe.

The accomplice was arrested on November 27, last year, following a tip-off.

The infant was subsequently placed under the care of the Department of Social Welfare.

When the accused person learnt of her accomplice’s arrest, she returned home on December 12, to claim the infant back.

She was, however, arrested as her claim was suspicious because she had declared her infant, dead a few days after giving birth.
