Woman hit by car while helping dog

Cape Town — The founder of an animal welfare society in the Karoo is in a serious condition in a Paarl hospital after she was hit by a car while helping an injured dog.
Newspapers reported yesterday that Colette Teale (60) the founder of the Karoo Animal                Welfare Protection Society, broke both of her hips and possibly damaged her spine in the accident near the Du Toit’s Kloof tunnel outside Paarl on Wednesday.
“They [Teale and her husband Percy] had just dropped a dog at its new home,” Teale’s colleague, Lola Cox, told the newspaper.
“On the way back she saw a dog standing on a traffic island in the middle of the road.
“They wanted to help it so they stopped                            and she got out of the car. That’s when a car hit            her.”
The SPCA’s chief executive, Allan Perrins, said he was not surprised Teale, who lived on a farm in Barrydale, had risked her life to try to save an animal.
“That’s just the type of person she is,” he said.
Perrins said the SPCA had a specific rule when it came to trying to rescue animals in a road.
He said the SPCA was mandated to rescue sick and injured stray dogs.
The municipality or law enforcement officers were mandated to pick up healthy, stray animals. —- Sapa.
