A WOMAN who allegedly smuggled drugs which cost more than US$10000 has been arrested and appeared before a Beitbridge magistrate.
According to the National Prosecution Authority, Thembi Moyo (27) was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 1 October. She is facing charges of unlawful dealing in drugs contravening the Medicines Control Act.
A court heard that on 11 September, Moyo allegedly smuggled dagga and broncleer cough syrupfrom South Africa.
She wrapped the drugs with blankets, stashed them in sacks and loaded them into the boot of the vehicle. Moyo had intended to take the drugs to Harare.
But her plans came crashing down after the police Canine section who were on patrol stopped the bus and sniffer dogs quickly picked up the smell of dagga leading to a search and discovery of them hidden inside folded blankets. Police recovered 53 cobs of dagga and broncleer cough syrup.
The dagga weighed 103,716kg with an estimated street value of US$ 10,371. The broncleer cost US$300.
