A Harare man claimed his ex-wife had ordered him to leave the house within 24 hours after they had an altercation.

Steven Chiya said this to magistrate Tamara Chibindi after his ex-wife, Esther Chitsa, sought and was granted a protection order against him for physical and verbal abuse. Esther said her ex-husband was in the habit of physically assaulting her.

“He beats me and when I run for help to our neighbours, he follows and drags me out. He damaged all the property.

“At one point he assaulted me and I ran away to my parents’ house. He then took another woman,” she said.

“I told him to leave my house and he left with the house keys.”

Steven did not oppose the application.

“I do not oppose, but I built the house in question, although it’s on her stand.

“The problem is that whenever l consult her about something, she chases me away.

“When we last encountered each other, she gave me a 24-hour ultimatum to leave her house if I still wanted my life.

“I did not take the keys intentionally, but by mistake. I returned the keys and apologised,” he said.
