SOUTH AFRICA- A boyfriend is in serious trouble following the death of 22-year-old Koketso Lekgoathi, found dead on October 8 in his outside room in Diepkloof, Soweto, South Africa. Reports indicate she was assaulted, strangled, and beaten after a dispute over her late return from church.
Initially arrested, the boyfriend was reportedly released within hours. He had been evading capture until local residents apprehended him and handed him over to the police on October 9.
Koketso’s aunt, Thato Mhlongo, revealed that Koketso feared her boyfriend, who had a history of violent crimes.
“He threatened her that if she ever left him, he’d deal with her,” she said.
Thato learned of Koketso’s death from patrol officers and rushed to the scene, where she found her niece’s body covered in blood and bruises. Despite calling her name, Koketso was unresponsive.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a man reported his girlfriend might have ingested poison, but upon arrival, paramedics declared her dead.
An investigation revealed injuries, prompting the case to be classified as murder.
The boyfriend appeared in Orlando Magistrates Court on October 11, facing murder charges, with the case postponed to October 24.
