The mother of a six-year-old boy born blind and deaf is seeking financial assistance to enable him to go to special schools and buy hearing aids that will enable him to understand, communicate and participate fully in daily activities.
Sijabuliso Mhute was born with many health challenges, including Down’s syndrome, a chromosome disorder.
He is also incapable of holding anything as he does not have a grip due to weakness in his bones.
Ms Sibonokuhle Nyamambi, the mother of the child, said she needed financial assistance because she could not afford to buy hearing aids and send her child to a special school. Sijabuliso is the only child of Ms Nyamambi who was divorced by her husband some years back.
“I am appealing to all well-wishers to help me in acquiring the essential elements necessary for the growth and development of my child,” said Ms Nyamambi.
“My son is going through many challenges which are not easy to accept as a parent. “He is my only child. I am a single mother and no one is helping to take care of my child who needs special care and treatment.” Ms Nyamambi said her son had undergone operation twice at Sekuru Kaguvi Hospital to remove cataracts in his eyes that have caused the blindness.
“He was first operated when he was seven months old and then last month they also operated his both eyes and removed the cataract,” she said.

Down’s syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21. This genetic disorder, varies in severity, causing lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays, while in some people it causes health problems.
