Woman sentenced for stealing $136 442 from One Money system

A 32-YEAR-OLD woman from Bulawayo has been slapped with an 18-month sentence for exploiting a technical glitch in NetOne’s One Money system and stealing $136 442.

Clara Ncube appeared before a Bulawayo regional magistrate facing a charge of theft. She was convicted and sentenced. Six months of the sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and another six months was suspended on condition that she restitutes $24 400 to the complainant.

The remaining six months were suspended on condition that she completes 211 hours of community service at Drill Hall CID Minerals. The court heard that from 10 May to 13 May 2024, Ncube took advantage of a system error that allowed mobile money to be transferred without corresponding deductions.

She executed multiple transactions below the transactional limit of $2 400 to avoid detection and stole money from the network provider. Investigations were conducted leading to her arrest, Netone has since rectified the glitch. The total value stolen was $136 442 and $112 042 was recovered.
