Woman sues dad for university fees

A 20-YEAR-OLD woman from Bulawayo yesterday dragged her father to the maintenance court demanding that he pays for her university studies.

Karryn Crowther wants Kenneth Crowther to pay $520 as maintenance since she has already been admitted to the University of Johannesburg in South Africa.

“I’m applying for maintenance in the sum of $520 a month. Kenneth Crowther is my father and I want maintenance from him,” said Karryn.

“He hasn’t been doing anything for my upkeep as far as fees is concerned. I’m supposed to commence studies at university in 2016, so I want him to assist in my education”.

Karryn told magistrate Adelaide Mbeure that she wanted the money to cater for her living expenses when she becomes resident in Johannesburg.

“I need the money for rentals, fees, food and transport when I’m in South Africa,” said Karryn.

Crowther, an engineman at the National Railways of Zimbabwe, said he wasn’t willing to pay the money.

“I’m already maintaining her. I’m making monthly contributions towards her and her other siblings. I’m paying $300,” he said.

Mbeure dismissed Karryn’s claim.

“There’s already an order for maintenance in which applicant is receiving $100 each month. So applicant should have made an application for extension of the initial order or a variation. The maintenance application is hereby dismissed,” said Mbeure.
