Women in construction celebrated

WOMEN in the construction industry have been praised by the Government for the vital role they play in enhancing the economy and driving sustainable growth.

The acknowledgment came from Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, at the recent Zimbabwe Building Contractors Association (ZBCA) conference and awards ceremony in Harare.

The event sought to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women in the construction sector and underscore their importance in building the nation’s infrastructure and economy.

It was held under the theme, “Embrace change, cultivate growth and transform” and brought together influential figures, including Minister Mutsvangwa, ZBCA chief executive Mrs Joyline Zindaga, ZBCA women’s desk chairperson Miss Portia Mariga and women from different organisations.

In her address, Minister Mutsvangwa highlighted the historical context of the construction industry as a male-dominated field.

She noted that women have continually defied stereotypes and made significant contributions to the sector’s innovation.

“From project managers and engineers to artisans and entrepreneurs, women are shaping the industry’s future,” she said.

“Recognising their achievements is essential not only for gender equality, but also for unlocking the sector’s full potential for national development.”

Minister Mutsvangwa said her ministry remains committed to promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment and social inclusion across all sectors of the economy.

She pointed out that this mission is reflected in the National Gender Policy and aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

The ZBCA holds a key position in shaping the construction sector, said Minister Mutsvangwa, adding that its mission revolves around encouraging professionalism and ensuring compliance with industry benchmarks.

“A notable initiative is the creation of the Women’s Desk, which actively supports the integration of women into the construction field, acknowledging that a diverse workforce drives innovation and efficiency.

“Furthermore, ZBCA’s inclusion of associate members and service providers within the industry serves as a powerful tool for empowerment, allowing women-owned enterprises to tap into vital markets and build strategic networks, ultimately enhancing their impact and visibility within the sector.

“While my Ministry provides funding for women through the Women’s Development Fund and the Zimbabwe Women’s Microfinance Bank, I urge financial institutions represented here to support women-driven initiatives. It is essential that we continue to design customised financial solutions, build robust support systems, and introduce targeted incentives that empower women entrepreneurs to expand and sustain their businesses,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

Women within the sector were called upon to unite, craft creative financing models and uplift one another in navigating and securing the financial resources they need to thrive.

The ZBCA, a non-profit organisation formed in 1985, plays a crucial role in shaping the construction sector.

Mrs Zindaga said the event marked a significant milestone for their industry.

“Today, we come together not just to reflect, but to recognise and uplift. We are here to celebrate the strength, resilience and brilliance of women who are reshaping the construction industry, brick by brick, plan by plan and project by project,” she said.

“Over the next few hours, we will explore topics that matter most to women in our industry, from leadership and innovation to business etiquette and community building.

“We will share experiences, insights and best practices that will help us grow, both personally and professionally. As we embark on this journey together, I encourage you to be bold, to take risks, and to support one another.

“Let’s celebrate our achievements and learn from our challenges.”

Mrs Zindaga said this year’s conference theme resonates deeply with the journey they have walked.
