Women Soccer League finally kicks off

AFTER more than a year without competitive action, the Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League finally returns with their topflight matches kicking off this weekend. This should be a relief to the clubs which last tasted competitive action in 2012, the year Marange Resources sponsored the league.

Theresa Maguraushe, the Zimbabwe Women’s Football Administrator, said 11 clubs – Mufakose Queens, Cyclone Stars, Burrow Jets Ladies, Tenax Queens, Conduit Soccer Academy, Chipembere Queens, Black Rhinos Queens, Hwange Colliery Ladies, Faith Drive Queens, ZRP Harare Province and Auckland Queens will play in weekend matches.

“We met on Saturday and we unanimously agreed that the Women Super League starts on July 5. Unfortunately there is no sponsor for the league at the moment, but the league will proceed as planned. We also appeal to prospective sponsors to partner the girl child by sponsoring the Super League,” she said.

Fixtures are expected today.

In the absence of league matches, clubs have been busy with the NetOne Cup whose final was supposed to be played last week featuring Bulawayo’s Inline Academy and Black Rhinos Queens but was postponed to a date yet to be announced.

The women’s football boss Miriam Sibanda told this publication that club owners had resolved to have the season kick off without a sponsor as her association is still hunting for funding.

The Super League was initiated in 2011 and teams played without a sponsor that year before Marange Resources came on board in 2012.

In 2013 there was no action and the former board led by Mavis Gumbo and Zifa honorary life member Cecilia Malunga failed to give any explanation as to why the league programme was aborted after so much promise the previous season.

“There is no way we can find sponsors if we are not active and for that reason club owners are willing to fund the clubs to fulfill fixtures.

That will give the corporate world an opportunity to come and watch and maybe come on board,” Sibanda was quoted as saying.
