THE senior women’s volleyball national team yesterday began preparations for the Zone Six World Championships qualifiers that will be held in Zambia next week.Twelve players reported for camp in Harare to begin preparations for the second round of Zone Six qualifiers.
Nozipho Khumalo, Nomagugu Dube, Thembela Chanza, Prenade Makumbokurenga, Kudzai Chireka and Tsungirirai Taderera will not be part of the entourage to travel to Zambia for various reasons.
The six players played a pivotal role in the first round of the qualifiers which saw Zimbabwe topping the group as they were unbeaten in Malawi.
Zimbabwe Volleyball Association administrator Sibangane Mashasha said another problem that has affected the team was poor funding.
“We wish the teams could have adequate time to prepare but because of lack of funding we are not able to do that,” said Mashasha.
He said they now pinned their hopes on the new Ministry of Sport.
“We need tactical and technical courses for our coaches and I hope with the new Ministry of Sport, we will be able to change the attitude of the corporate world towards volleyball,” said Mashasha.
Zimbabwe is set to clash with Botswana, Mozambique, Lesotho, Swaziland and the hosts Zambia in the next round. The team will be travelling to Zambia on Sunday.
