VETERANS Youth Basketball Development Association will establish a Basketball Academy at Municipal Sports Club.  They are also embarking on refurbishing courts around the city especially in high-density suburbs to revitalise the sport. They have already converted under utilised tennis courts at Municipal Sports Club into basketball courts which will be their academy centre.

Veterans Youth Development Association president Durall Adams said their aim is to create facilities that are in line with the development of sport from grassroots levels.

“We want to make basketball a dominant sport again, even in terms of support, we can achieve that only if we start from grassroots,” he said.

Adams said they have gone around identifying suitable venues to establish basketball centres in high-density suburbs to spread basketball around the city.

“We have identified the places to renovate courts as most of them are lying idle which is bad, these places will then be available for use by schools and clubs,” said Adams.

Chief executive officer Sinda Mono said most teams in the high-density suburbs are unfortunate because they do not to have proper facilities.

“Most teams in the ghetto do not have courts or enough funds to affiliate to BBA therefore we want to help as veterans,” he said.
Mono said they would establish a Ghetto League during the off-season which consists of non-BBA teams.

“We want to revive the Ghetto League which will run in the off-season, as most teams in the ghetto cannot afford to pay affiliation fees therefore they are not allowed to play, but as veterans we want every child to have a chance to take part in basketball,” said Mono one of the most decorated basketball coaches in the land with successes at Highlanders and Peking Stars.
