Women in business have welcomed the Affirmative Procurement initiative introduced by the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (PRAZ), which aims to create pathways for women to thrive in economic spaces.
This transformative measure prioritizes the inclusion of women-owned businesses and promotes equitable access to procurement opportunities, fostering a more inclusive and diverse economic landscape.
Speaking at the Women in Procurement Conference held in Harare on Tuesday, Mrs Ntombenhle Moyo, a PRAZ board member, said it is important to collaborate, build relationships, and foster growth in empowering women in the procurement sector.
The conference, held under the theme “Collaboration, Relationships, and Growth”, highlighted the transformative power of collective efforts in enhancing women’s roles within the procurement industry.
Mrs Moyo said building strong networks with stakeholders, including Government agencies, private enterprises, and civil society, is crucial for establishing trust and understanding.
These networks enable women to negotiate better opportunities, access markets effectively, and contribute to a more inclusive procurement landscape.
She added that as women engage in capacity-building initiatives and take on leadership roles, they not only enhance their professional skills, but also drive economic growth and innovation in Zimbabwe and beyond.
PRAZ chief executive officer Mr Clever Ruswa said networks and collaborations should go beyond mere transactions, since they are vital for creating a supportive network that encourages collaboration and innovation.
Mr Ruswa said the practical advice shared at the conference, such as seeking mentorship, honing negotiation skills, and advocating for initiatives, provides women with a toolkit of strategies to advance their careers and achieve growth and success.
The Affirmative Procurement initiative is a huge step toward addressing gender disparities in the sector.
By prioritising women-owned businesses, PRAZ is not only promoting gender equality, but also unlocking the potential of women to contribute meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s economic development.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable economy, where women are not just participants, but leaders in procurement processes.
By fostering strong relationships and providing practical tools for growth, PRAZ is paving the way for women to take on more prominent roles in the sector, driving innovation and economic progress in Zimbabwe.
