Women across the country must be empowered so that they can make meaningful contributions to national development, ZANU PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs Cde Mabel Chinomona has said.
Cde Chinomoma made the remarks while officiating during the distribution of chicks and sewing machines to women in Mashonaland East province on Thursday.
About 10 000 chicks were handed to women at a function held at Musami Mission grounds under the Presidential Poultry Scheme.
Nearly 1 000 women benefited from this programme. Some vocational training centres and colleges in Mashonaland East, including Nyadire and Kushinga Phikelela, also received chicks to start their poultry projects.
“This is a project meant to empower you as women. Women’s empowerment is key to national development,” she said.
“Yes, the chicks could be few in numbers, but I urge you, beneficiaries, to take good care of these chicks. Make sure these chicks do not die. This is the beginning of your empowerment.”
She commended President Mnangagwa for his tireless efforts in empowering women, saying this has enabled women to even take up positions of influence in all sectors.
The Presidential Poultry Scheme is a Government initiative that provides free-range and broiler chickens to families, particularly in rural areas, to boost food security as well as increase household incomes.
