Women’s Southern Region Soccer league kicks off

THE Women’s Southern Region Football League which was set to kick off this weekend gets off the blocks next weekend.
Several matches were lined up for yesterday but Zifa Women Southern Region chairman Takundwa Chimundiya said teams were yet to fully register their sides hence the rescheduling.

Only one match was played yesterday featuring Victoria Falls’ Discovery Academy and ZRP Bulawayo in the resort town.

Chimundiya said they were eyeing eight teams but were open to accommodate more, adding that their wish was to have a manageable number of teams, preferably 10 to avoid choking the clubs with heavy financial obligations.

Hwange Ladies won the league last year, earning a ticket to play in the national Women’s Super League.
Eight teams attended a pre-season meeting held over a fortnight ago. These included Inline Academy, Magwegwe Stars, Cowdray Park, Sigola, Street Set, Hillside Teachers College, Discovery Academy Ladies and ZRP Bulawayo.

Chimundiya, however, said there were doubts on whether Hillside would fully affiliate with the league although the team had been fixtured. Affiliation fees have been set at $150.

“A team from Nyamandlovu and one from United College of Education had expressed interest in joining the league but they did not attend the pre-season meeting but those who think they can assemble a team that can compete in Division One should approach us as we still have places to accommodate them.”
