THE Zimbabwe senior women’s volleyball team came fourth in the Zone Six World Championships qualifiers which were held in Zambia last week.
Zimbabwe won two and lost three matches.
The girls lost to Mozambique and thumped the hosts Zambia.
They lost 2-3 against Mozambique in the first match before winning 3-1 against Zambia. Zimbabwe suffered back to back defeats, 3-1 against Namibia and 3-0 against Botswana in the next two matches before beating Swaziland 3-2 on the last day of the competition.
Coach Vulindlela Moyo bemoaned the team’s combinations which did not click during the disastrous campaign in which they went without five key players who were committed with school and college examinations.
“It was very bad, the team failed to click,” said Moyo.
Moyo said the girls were just not up to the challenge.
“I’m disappointed, the team we had was not up to the task, we missed the services of the players who did duty in Malawi,” said the veteran coach.
In Malawi where the first round stage of the qualifiers was staged, Zimbabwe finished at the top of the group standings.
Nozipho Khumalo, Nomagugu Dube, Thembela Chanza, Prenade Makumbokurenga, Kudzai Chireka and Tsungirirai Taderera are the players that did not travel to Zambia.
Despite a disappointing campaign ZRP Raiders’ Proceed Mkhonto was named the tournament’s best libero, a prize she also scooped in Malawi.
The team arrived back home yesterday.
