A 12-member Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team that will participate in the World Cup qualifiers set for South Africa early next month has been selected. The qualifiers will run from 4-8 August. The team will report for camp in Bulawayo this week before departure for South Africa on Friday, 2 August.

The Zimbabwe Women basketball team will be competing for the first time outside the country.
They will compete against the hosts South Africa, Nigeria, Angola, Cameroon and Morocco.

Bulawayo side Qhubeka Basketball and Harare’s Richwood clubs’ players dominate the national team with five players coming from Bulawayo and four from the capital. Morlen Muza from Zvishavane is the only player in the team who is neither from Bulawayo nor Harare. Team manager Nkosilathi Dube said they are still trying to source funds to travel to South Africa.

The team recently received a timely boost when Zanu-PF House of Assembly candidate for Makokoba Tshinga Dube donated $400 in cash while Tarismek Trading gave them a first aid kit.

“We are still sourcing funds to travel, we still don’t have enough and we hope to get more sponsorship,” said Dube.
Dube is optimistic the national team will qualify for the World Cup.

The team will fine tune their preparations with friendly matches against Under-23s and Under-25s before they depart for the qualifiers.
