CONSTRUCTION of the much-awaited Gandayi Clinic in Ward 14, Mutare South, has commenced following the availing of resources by Zanu-PF candidate for the constituency Cde Jefry Ngome.
Cde Ngome told The Herald that he had dispatched a team of builders with building materials to construct the clinic, a project that was long overdue.
Gandayi Clinic will service nine villages.
When The Herald visited the construction site on Friday last week, work had already commenced.
Pregnant women in Ward 14 have been facing the challenge of walking for over 15 kilometres, sometimes in the middle of the night, to the nearest clinic.
The villagers have been getting health services at Zimunya and Rowa clinics, 15km away.
Patients that will benefit from Gandayi Clinic include those from Chitiyo, Mundunguma, Kambarami, Rushinga, Munyama, Chapeyama, Temberere, Mushati and Kamutanho.
Villagers from these nine villages started constructing the clinic in 2014, but stopped at slab level after they ran out of materials due to lack of funding.
A Chitiyo villager, Mrs Irene Nyagutu, said maternal deaths due to lack of immediate health services had increased in their constituency, hence the need for a clinic.
Cde Ngome has also committed resources for the construction of a bridge across the Murowa River .
