I USED to think that hard work always pays, but over time I have discovered that those who put in endless effort do not necessarily earn much.
To a greater extent, it is those who work smart, those who combine skill, creativity and strategy who often earn more than those who simply exert themselves.
A good example is the conductor of a commuter omnibus.
Most of these conductors work for 16 hours a day, often under difficult conditions.
If you have ever observed them, you will know the immense energy they put into their day. Some begin as early as 4am, and only rest as late as 11pm. They are constantly on the move, calling for passengers, collecting fares, and keeping order in a busy vehicle.
If they were being paid even US$10 per hour, their earnings would be significant.
Yet in reality, their income does not reflect their effort. This shows clearly that hard work alone does not always pay.
It is also true that some people who are labouring tirelessly but earning very little may have missed the opportunity to learn how to work smart, sometimes because of circumstances outside their control.
Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 education system is inculcating values of working smart.
Learners are taught to learn how to be efficient, strategic and innovative — to work smart rather than only hard.
You will realise that some careers which pay far more are surprisingly simple, sometimes requiring little more than clicking a button, yet they are rooted in knowledge.
When you invest your time in learning, you escape the trap of working hard while being underpaid. It is wiser to dedicate hours to acquiring a skill that rewards you generously with less physical strain.
For instance, today there are countless free online courses that can equip you with practical skills to help you earn more while working smart.
At Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences, there are a variety of courses offered at affordable prices. These, not only give students knowledge, but also a certificate from a recognised and reputable institution.
One popular course that is currently on demand is the Solar Design and Installation.
Since many people are moving towards renewable and clean energy, this field presents the chance to register a company, attract clients, generate sustainable income, and even grow into a position where you lead the organisation you establish.
What you know ultimately empowers you to earn more. In other words, success is not merely about effort but about knowledge.
Equip yourself with learning so that you do not simply work hard but truly work smart.
