MUSIC fans had a memorable night at Alliance Francaise when it hosted a pre-World Music Day show on Saturday.

Bass guitarist Josh Meck and Jeys Marabini set the tone with polished performances.

The World Music Day is celebrated on June 21 every year.

However, management at Alliance Francaise – a hub of cultural diversity – gave fans a precursor to the Day with a well-attended show.

Buoyed by his triumph at the recently-held Zimbabwe Music Awards ceremony, Meck was at his usual best playing his own compositions and covers.

He belted out mainly sing-along tracks.

Meck gave each and every instrumentalist of his outfit a chance to showcase their skills.

Afterwards, he paved the way for Jeys, who boasts of 33 years in the game, and is still evolving. He sang both Ndebele and Shona tracks.

What made his act worth mentioning was his stage communication, engagement and, of course, the chemistry of his group.

He gave fans a replica of his performance at this year’s Jazz & Soul in Zimbabwe Music Festival held at Sherwood Golf Club.

He invited Mokoomba lead guitarist, Trust Samende, on stage in true spirit of unity.

Afterwards, he also invited Mono Mukundu to come on stage and showcase his skills.

After the show, he saluted fans and event organisers for having faith in his brand.

“I’m humbled after being invited to come and perform here. This is my second time performing here and I can’t ask for more,” he said.

“It’s also an honour for us to be given a slot at such a big occasion, which attracted a cosmopolitan crowd.

“I will continue cherishing such moments and give back to our fans and promoters.”

Responding to the Harare fans’ appeal that he must settle in the capital city, he said:

“People have been asking us to shift base to Harare but it’s not that easy.

“It has to be a process but what I can assure them is that I will be performing here regularly.

“I will relocate at the right time but at the moment we are focusing on building a fan base.

“Of course, I have toured America, Asia and Europe but I think I should also be known in my country.

“I think I must also spread my wings countrywide and be known as their star,” he said.
