WORLD Vision assisted Mwacheta Primarys School with toilets that allow the disabled people to use them in the wake of a mishap which resulted in its deputy head being wheel chair bound.
The Mwacheta community has applauded the move, notwithstanding that it was a joint move between the development partner and the School Development Committee.
Mr Norbert Muzungu, the World Vision representative thanked the Mwacheta community for being disability sensitive.
“Without your input, this project wouldn’t have been a success. Sadly, we have been at the wrong end of the stick since that unforgettable February 5 incident that robbed the deputy head’s legs.
“As a development partner, in our small way, we have been able to co-operate in building these ablution structures that are friendly to the physically challenged among us,” he said.
Construction materials such as cement, asbestos, paint, iron bars and mesh wire were provided by World Vision, while the school chipped in with locally available materials and labour.
Mr Chadura, a physiotherapist, said the project was the first of its kind in the district as many schools are still to appreciate inclusivity in education.
He appealed to communities that have some people or children with disabilities to mobilise resources to revamp their infrastructure and make them accessible to the physically challenged.
The friendly toilets have rails and an elevated seat that makes the person seat comfortable in the toilet.
It has a spacious entrance for the free movement of the wheel chair into the toilet. This allows the physically challenged children to access them without much help from their peers.
Mwacheta head Mr David Maposa thanked World Vision for the gestures which has made life easier for those whose needs could have been easily ignored.
“I want to thank World Vision and all those who made this project a success. Your support, including that of the SDC chair, to this project has been whole-hearted. To my dear colleague, Mr Chigugudlo, I say welcome back to Mwacheta. We are grateful you survived the accident,” he said.
