THE Zimbabwe Wrestling Federation (ZWF) is working on a programme to align its activities with those of the Federation of International Wrestling Associations (Fiwa) which held its congress in Uzbekistan last year. At the congress which was held in September, the international wrestling motherbody changed its name from United World Wrestling to FIWA to reflect its incorporation of the different forms of wrestling.
ZWF secretary-general Tapiwa Masinire said as part of the alignment of its activities, the federation has lined up training of wrestling instructors where on completion they will assume a new title of educators.
“We’ve already started implementing the new wrestling guidelines as set out during the international congress last year. We’ve lined up a series of train the trainer courses which will run from March 16 to May 15.
“In between the courses we will be holding national championships which we will use to evaluate the instructors as they move to get the new title of educators in line with the new international regulations,” he said.
Masinire said ZWF will be using the championships to evaluate the instructors that will select teams to take part at two major events on the wrestling calendar this year.
Wrestling is one of the sporting disciplines at the All-Africa Games set for Congo in September before the World Championships in October.
In the past the national association has been accused of only coming to life during All-Africa Games instead of being active throughout with structures at all levels.
Last year the wrestling body took a youthful 18-member team to the World Wrestling Club Championships held in Iran and Masinire believes they gained enough experience to hold their own in future international competitions.
