Youthful gospel choir Purple Pride Family gave the elderly at Bumhudzo Old People’s Home an early Christmas treat over the weekend when they performed and donated goods at the home. Their efforts were part of their annual “Christmas of Love” initiative where they give back to the community.
According to the choir’s director Albert Mtengwa, their efforts were not aimed at simply giving material things but the gift of love this festive season.
“This is the second time we are carrying out this act since launching our choir last year. Our first was at SOS Children’s Home last December but this is how we are going to be wrapping up our calendar every year. We had a great time with our grandparents and are happy that we put smiles on their faces,” he said.
Mtengwa added that the group felt good about giving back this year as they had been blessed with a successful debut live DVD recording. He said old people’s homes were being overlooked in the society.
“Often, children in homes are preferred over the old people. But as much as we feel that all people are important we feel there is a need to spread the love to the old people, too. We might have a wide generational gap with them but we can come together and learn a lot from each.”
The 35-member choir also touched the hearts of the elderly through a live performance of their second album “Proclaiming His Name: Psalm 68:34”.
The old folks were kept on their feet throughout the day as they danced to the songs before requesting traditional hymns.
“We are a non-profit making group so we use the money generated from our album sales and other fund-raising activities to finance our charity activities.”
Purple Pride Family is an interdenominational choir of youths that came together to spread the word of God through music.
