The 1987 Unity Accord signed by President Mugabe and the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo is irreversible as the two are the only signatories to the agreement, Zanu-PF national chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo has said.In an interview yesterday, Cde Khaya Moyo said anyone who claimed to have pulled out of the agreement was therefore day dreaming.
He said the Unity Accord was endorsed by congresses of both Zanu and Zapu and could not be reversed by mere statements by some failed politicians who did not append their signatures to it.
Some political turncoats are claiming to have pulled out of the Unity Accord and “revived” Dr Nkomo’s Zapu.
“We are not talking of day dreamers here. There are only two signatories to the Unity Accord who are President Mugabe and the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo. How can you pull out from an agreement where you are not a signatory?” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
He said the Unity Accord was alive and people should use it to reflect on achievements brought by the agreement.
The nation celebrates the Unity Day on December 22 every year.
“Our motto as a party is Unity, Peace and Development and as such we must take this Unity Accord seriously and never depart from its original text. We must use it to consolidate our efforts to attain economic emancipation because we are quite aware that without peace there is no development,” Cde Khaya Moyo said.
This year’s Unity Day main celebrations will be held in Bulawayo.
Cde Khaya said celebrations were unique and special in a number of ways.
Firstly, Cde Khaya Moyo said, President Mugabe would honour Dr Nkomo’s esteemed work by unveiling his statue in Bulawayo.
“This year’s Unity Day is a special one because President Mugabe will be commissioning the Joshua Nkomo Airport and unveil his statue in Bulawayo,” he said.
“The President will also take the opportunity to rename Main Street to Joshua Nkomo Street.”
Cde Khaya Moyo said the Unity Day celebrations also came on the backdrop of a resounding victory in the July 31 harmonised elections and at a time when the party had successfully hold its provincial elections.
“It is also coming after we have hosted a successful National People’s Conference in Chinhoyi,” he said.
“Essentially this has been a great year in the history of Zanu-PF.”
Cde Khaya Moyo said it should always be remembered that Zimbabwe was a product of a protracted liberation struggle led by President Mugabe and Vice President Nkomo.
As such, he said efforts should be intensified to guard the country’s independence from neo colonialism machinations.
The Unity Accord sealed the relationship between Zanu and Zapu’s military wings – Zanla and Zipra that waged a joint protracted war for more than a decade to dislodge the minority repressive rule of Ian Smith.
The two former parties irrevocably committed themselves under this agreement to unite under the umbrella of Zanu-PF led by President Mugabe.
